※"come up hard"は「貧しい環境で育つ」という意味ですが、どうやらアメリカ南部の方言(ないしスラング)だそうで、あまり一般的には使われないようです。ですから、問(5)を解くときは文脈から判断せざるを得ません(選択肢にも「貧乏育ち」にあたる肢はありませんし‥)。選択肢は以下の五つです。
ア. 一所懸命に努力を重ねてきた人びと
イ. 子どものときから病弱だった人びと
ウ. 他人に対して冷たくしてきた人びと
エ. 親から厳しいしつけを受けた人びと
オ. 苦労して現在の地位を築いた人びと
赤本(25年)の解答は、 肢エ「 親から厳しいしつけを受けた人びと」です。河合のネットでの解答は肢オ「苦労して現在の地位を築いた人びと」です。他にも肢オを正解とするものがあります。
肢オは”come up the hard way”を意識して作問者が選択肢としたのでしょうか?(それとも正解か?)
"come up the hard way”は「厳しい、過酷な道を登って行く」から「苦労して現在の地位を築く」という意味になるのでしょう。これに対して"come up hard"は"come up (成長する)"を"hard(厳しい・過酷な)"が修飾するのだから、「厳しいし家庭環境で厳しい躾を受けて育った」と考えられます。したがって、肢エ「 親から厳しいしつけを受けた人びと」が正解ではないかと思います。
文脈からもエが正解と思います(25年の解答参照)。「現在の地位」はあまり関係がなさそうだし。
MARVIN GAYE はTROUBLEMANで"come up hard”を連呼しています。この歌詞を読むと、"come up hard”には「苦労して現在の地位を築」くに含意される肯定的ないしプラスのニュアンスが見当たりません。いかがでしょうか?
