【コメント】”squeezed on”だから満員のバスで人を押しのけて乗ったのでしょう。

【コメント】”be flooded with~”は「～であふれる」「～がおしよせる」。"appreciation"の訳は難しい。「好意的な理解」と考えて上の訳にしました。「子供の行為を評価したい」ということなんでしょうけど訳は難しいよね。

【コメント】”losing his place in the New York Times”が分かりにくい。直訳すると「ニューヨークタムズの中の場所を失うことすらせず」となる。電車で立ちながら新聞を読んでいるオッサンが、席が空いたのをみて新聞をよみながら（人に譲ろうとすることすら考えず）さっと席を確保したということ。
